Nosophobia is the irrational fear of contracting a disease. People with nosophobia often obsessively worry about their health, constantly fearing they will become seriously ill. This can lead to excessive medical check-ups, avoidance of situations they believe might expose them to diseases, and significant distress and impairment in daily functioning. Nosophobia is distinct from hypochondriasis (health anxiety), although the two can overlap; hypochondriasis involves a preoccupation with having a serious illness based on misinterpretation of bodily symptoms, while nosophobia is more about the fear of contracting an illness.
