Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by an intense fear of situations where escape might be difficult or help unavailable in the event of a panic attack or other embarrassing symptoms. This often leads to avoidance of places or situations such as crowded areas, open spaces, public transportation, or being outside the home alone. People with agoraphobia may feel trapped, helpless, or embarrassed and, as a result, may become increasingly isolated, sometimes to the point of being unable to leave their homes. Treatment typically involves therapy, medication, or a combination of both.
