Thunder is caused by the rapid expansion and contraction of air heated by a lightning strike. When lightning occurs, it heats the air to extremely high temperatures in a fraction of a second, causing it to expand quickly. This rapid expansion creates shock waves that we hear as thunder. The sound travels slower than light, which is why thunder follows lightning.
