The August 26, 2026 flash floods in Nepal were caused by an enormous landslide that triggered the collapse of part of a Himalayan glacier along the Nepal-China border.
What happened:
Scientists identified the trigger as a massive landslide that caused at least part of a glacier to collapse down the Himalayas, unleashing the flash floods.
The flooding struck a 72 km stretch of the Trishuli River in Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, also affecting the Gyirong Port crossing on the China-Nepal border.
The glacier collapse triggered a seismic tremor measuring 5.2 magnitude, detected by seismometers as far away as the US and Germany.
Flood waters were estimated at 130–160 feet high, moving as fast as 44 miles per hour.
