Kidney diseases compromise kidney functions including filtration and elimination of the waste products. In general, the majority of the population does not notice symptoms until kidney function has already declined. Kidney disease often develops quietly, which is why it’s sometimes called a “silent” condition. In its early stages, many people feel completely normal. As kidney function declines, symptoms may begin to appear, including tiredness, swelling in the feet, ankles, or around the eyes, changes in urination, foamy or bloody urine, muscle cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, itchy skin, and trouble concentrating. Since these symptoms can be linked to many other conditions, it’s important to see a healthcare professional rather than self-diagnose.
