The liver is made up of tiny structural units called lobules, where hepatocytes (the main liver cells) are arranged in plates or layers. The spaces around these plates contain specialised blood channels and supporting structures that help the liver carry out its daily functions, from processing nutrients to breaking down drugs and removing waste.
1. Hepatic sinusoids: Hepatic sinusoids are small blood channels that run between the plates of hepatocytes. They carry blood from branches of the portal vein and hepatic artery. Their thin, specialised walls allow oxygen, nutrients, and other substances to move between the blood and liver cells.
