The Jallianwala Bagh tragedy was a direct result of the protest against the repressive Rowlatt Act of 1919. This act, enacted by the British government, allowed for the arrest and detention of individuals without trial and was widely criticized for its draconian measures. The massacre occurred when British troops, under General Dyer, fired upon a large crowd gathering in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, to protest against these repressive laws.
