Change in Rotational Quantum Number (ΔJ):

Selection Rule: ΔJ = ±1. This means the rotational quantum number (J) can only change by 1 unit during a rotational transition.
Explanation: This rule arises from the specific properties of the rotational wavefunctions and their interaction with the electric field. Transitions with ΔJ ≠ ±1 have very low probability and are not typically observed.
Allowed Transitions: J can increase by 1 (absorption of energy) or decrease by 1 (emission of energy). This leads to selection of specific transitions in the rotational spectrum.
    Additional Considerations:

Selection Rules for Specific Molecule Types: While ΔJ = ±1 is the general rule, there might be additional selection rules for specific molecule types (linear, symmetric top, asymmetric top) based on their symmetry properties.
Nuclear Spin: In some cases, the nuclear spin of the atoms in the molecule can affect the selection rules, leading to additional splitting of spectral lines.
