The Partition of Bengal was done during the period of Lord Curzon’s tenure as the British Viceroy of India. It was officially carried out on October 16, 1905. This partition was intended to divide the Bengal Presidency into two separate provinces, Bengal and East Bengal and Assam, largely for administrative reasons but also to create a divide between the Hindu and Muslim communities. The move was widely criticized as a tactic to weaken the nationalist movement, and it was reversed in 1911.
