The Kalinga War took place in 261 BCE. It was fought between the Mauryan Empire, led by Emperor Ashoka, and the state of Kalinga. The war is significant in history as it led to a profound transformation in Ashoka, who, after witnessing the destruction and suffering caused by the war, embraced Buddhism and promoted non-violence and dharma.
Kalinga Under the Mauryan
It was Asoka, the son of Vindusara who invaded Kalinga in 261 B.C. and succeeded in occupying Kalinga. The Kalinga War was of colossal nature in which as many as 1,00,000 were killed and 1,50,000 were taken captives while as many as that number died as an aftermath of the war.
