Kabir was a disciple of Swami Ramananda, a Bhakti poet-saint in Varanasi. The Persian text Dabestan-e Mazaheb also refers to Kabir as a disciple of Ramanand, repeatedly calling him “Gang”. Kabir is believed to have lived in Kabir Chaura, Varanasi, and a maṭha in the area celebrates his life.
