Jaundice is a symptom of several diseases and conditions that affect the liver, bile ducts, or red blood cells. Common causes of jaundice include:
1. Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver, often due to viral infection)
2. Liver cirrhosis (scarring of the liver tissue, often from chronic alcohol abuse or hepatitis)
3. Gallstones(blockage in the bile ducts)
4. Liver cancer
5. Hemolytic anemia (increased breakdown of red blood cells)
6. Pancreatic cancer (especially if it blocks the bile duct)
Jaundice itself is characterized by yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes due to an accumulation of bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown.
