Ray Tomlinson, who is considered the inventor of email, introduced the use of the @ symbol in email addresses in 1971. Tomlinson used the @ symbol to separate the user name from the destination address when sending messages between computers in his office. The @ symbol was previously an obscure symbol used only by bookkeepers
