The working population in Russia was different from other countries in Europe before 1917 because not all Russian workers migrated from the villages to work in the industrial sector. Some of them continued to live in villages and went to work daily, to the towns.
Before 1917, the working population in Russia was different from other European countries in several ways. Most workers in Russia were agriculturalists, while industrial workers formed a smaller part of the population. Russian peasants often worked on small farms and lived in poor conditions. Industrial workers were concentrated in large cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg and worked for long hours with low wages. Unlike many Western European countries, Russia had less developed industries and a smaller urban working class.
