In a fed-batch operation, the sugar feed medium is gradually fed to the fermenter so that the sugar concentration remains low. Feeding occurs over a period of about 4 h. This avoids inhibition of the fermentation by a high concentration of sugars. The volume in the fermenter increases with time.
