Oil rigs float based on basic physics, as with cruise ships, heavy load barges, and oil tankers. As the rig’s weight pushes down, the displaced water pushes up, keeping the rig afloat. The principle of floatation states that a body that is partially or fully immersed in water will displace the same weight of water.
