Two-factor authentication (2FA) enhances security by adding an extra layer of protection beyond just a username and password. Here’s how it works and why it improves security:

    1. Two Separate Factors: 2FA requires two different forms of identification:
    * Something you know: Typically your password.
    * Something you have: This could be a smartphone app (like Google Authenticator), a hardware token, or a text message code.
    2. Increased Difficulty for Attackers: Even if an attacker manages to obtain your password through phishing or data breaches, they would still need the second factor (like access to your phone) to gain entry.
    3. Mitigates Risks of Weak Passwords: Many people use weak or reused passwords across multiple sites. 2FA mitigates the risk associated with this practice by requiring an additional authentication method.
    4. Real-Time Verification: The second factor often generates a time-sensitive code or requires action (like approving a login attempt), making it more difficult for unauthorized users to access your account.
    5. Alerts and Notifications: If someone attempts to log in to your account from an unrecognized device, the 2FA process will alert you, allowing you to take action if the attempt is suspicious.
    6. Reduction in Fraud and Identity Theft: By requiring two forms of verification, 2FA significantly reduces the likelihood of unauthorized access and identity theft.
