The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, prohibits the giving or receiving of dowry in marriages. It also makes demanding dowry a punishable offense. Additionally, Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code deals specifically with cruelty by husband or his relatives towards a married woman in connection with dowry demands.
