Viruses evolve through processes like mutation, recombination, and reassortment. Mutations occur when errors in viral replication lead to changes in the genetic code. Recombination happens when viruses exchange genetic material with other viruses co-infecting the same host cell. Reassortment occurs in viruses with segmented genomes, where different segments mix between different viruses during co-infection. These processes allow viruses to adapt to new environments, evade immune responses, and potentially infect new hosts.
