Submarines navigate underwater using a system called inertial navigation, which tracks the vessel’s movements from a known starting point using gyroscopes and accelerometers. Because GPS signals don’t penetrate deep water, submarines rely on this method to calculate their position. They also use sonar to detect underwater obstacles and map the seafloor.
