Oil rigs are kept in place by anchors or dynamic positioning systems that keep them over target. Anchors can be made of chains, wire rope, or polyester rope, or both. Some rigs are hooked up to a stabilizing anchor using wire rope. Other rigs use computer-coordinated thrusters to keep them stable. Propellers are also built into the structure to keep rigs stable.
