Algae can reproduce through both sexual and asexual means, depending on the species and environmental conditions. Asexual reproduction commonly occurs through cell division, where a single algal cell divides into two daughter cells, or through fragmentation, where a portion of the algal body breaks off and forms a new individual. Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of gametes (reproductive cells), which can be similar or dissimilar in size and structure depending on the algal species. This process typically results in the formation of zygotes, which develop into new algal individuals.
