Quipus were an intricate system of record-keeping used by the Inca civilization, consisting of colored, knotted cords. Each quipu had a primary cord with multiple pendant cords hanging from it. The knots and their positions on the cords represented numerical values and information. Different types of knots, such as single knots or figure-eight knots, indicated different numerical quantities, while colors and placement provided additional context. This system was used for a variety of purposes, including census data, tribute records, and possibly even storytelling. Quipus allowed the Inca to manage and store complex information efficiently, reflecting their advanced administrative and organizational skills despite not having a written language.
