April Fools’ Day, in most countries the first day of April. It received its name from the custom of playing practical jokes on this day—for example, telling friends that their shoelaces are untied or sending them on so-called fools’ errands. Although the day has been observed for centuries, its true origins are unknown and effectively unknowable.

The origins of April Fool’s Day are uncertain and shrouded in folklore, but it has been celebrated for centuries in various cultures around the world. One theory suggests that it dates back to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in the 16th century when New Year’s Day was moved from April 1st to January 1st. Those who continued to celebrate the old New Year’s Day in April were mocked and pranked by others, leading to the tradition of playing practical jokes on April 1st.

Another theory links April Fool’s Day to ancient spring festivals that involved lighthearted and mischievous behavior. These festivals often included elements of disguise, trickery, and role reversal, similar to the pranks and hoaxes associated with April Fool’s Day today.

Regardless of its exact origins, April Fool’s Day has evolved into a lighthearted and playful tradition observed in many countries, where people play harmless pranks, jokes, and hoaxes on friends, family, and coworkers. The day is celebrated with laughter and good-natured humor, with participants often shouting “April Fools!” after successfully tricking someone.
