Before electric lighting, people used oil lamps, candles, and gas lamps to illuminate their homes. Oil lamps used kerosene or other oils as fuel, while candles were made from beeswax or tallow. Gas lighting, introduced in the 19th century, involved gas lamps connected to a central gas supply, which provided brighter and more reliable light.
