Before vacuum cleaner, house was cleaned by typically using broom, cloth, water, detergents, brushes, and sometimes abrasive materials like sand or chemicals.
Homes were cleaned using brooms for sweeping and dusters or cloths for wiping surfaces. Carpets were cleaned by beating them with carpet beaters.
