Ancient Romans incorporated makeup into their daily lives with a focus on enhancing their appearance and adhering to the beauty standards of the time. Roman women used various cosmetics, including alba, a white lead-based powder to lighten their skin, and puleium, a mix of crushed insects and other substances to create red blush for cheeks and lips. They also used lips red, a red dye made from plant extracts, and kaoline for whitening their skin. The use of makeup was a sign of wealth and sophistication, and many Roman women applied cosmetics as part of their grooming routine. Perfumes and scented oils were also popular, adding to the emphasis on personal hygiene and luxury.
The Ancient Romans also made creams and lotions to fight and hide wrinkles, pimples, sun spots, freckles and flaking. These masks were a mixture of lentils, barley, lupine, honey or fennel blended with oils, oregano seeds, sulphur, vinegar, goose grease, basil juice and hawthorn.
