They fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and supplement organic matter to increase the fertility of the soil. Examples – Nostoc, Anabaena, Oscillatoria.
Cyanobacteria like Anaebena, Nostoc etc are considered useful in paddy fields as they enrich the soil with fixed Nitrogen that can be absorbed by the plants. Nitrogen is one of the macronutrients.
