Mitosis is a type of cell division that results in two daughter cells with identical genetic material as the parent cell. It consists of several stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During prophase, chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes, and the nuclear envelope breaks down. In metaphase, chromosomes align along the cell’s equator. Anaphase is characterized by the separation of sister chromatids, which are pulled to opposite poles of the cell. Finally, in telophase, nuclear envelopes re-form around the separated chromatids, and the cell undergoes cytokinesis, dividing into two daughter cells. Mitosis is essential for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction in organisms.
