PFCs are synthetic organic compounds characterized by strong carbon-fluorine bonds and hydrophobic properties. They include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). PFCs are widely used in various industrial and consumer applications, including non-stick coatings, firefighting foams, and water-repellent textiles, due to their exceptional chemical stability and water-resistant properties. However, PFCs are persistent in the environment and can accumulate in ecosystems, posing risks to human health and wildlife. They have been linked to adverse effects such as reproductive and developmental abnormalities, immune system suppression, and cancer. Efforts to mitigate PFC pollution include regulatory measures, remediation strategies, and development of safer alternatives.
