Viruses are infectious agents that consist of genetic material (either DNA or RNA) enclosed in a protein coat called a capsid. Some viruses also have an outer lipid envelope derived from the host cell membrane. Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites that replicate inside host cells by hijacking the cellular machinery to produce viral components. They can infect a wide range of organisms, including bacteria, plants, animals, and humans, causing various diseases such as the common cold, flu, and COVID-19.
