A simply supported beam is supported at both ends, typically with one end pinned and the other end on a roller, allowing it to freely rotate and have no moment resistance at the supports. A cantilever beam, on the other hand, is fixed at one end and free at the other, capable of supporting loads over the span of the beam and resisting bending moments and shear forces at the fixed end.
