Ekistics is the science of human settlements, which encompasses the study of the physical, social, and economic factors affecting human settlements and their development. It was coined by the Greek architect and town planner Constantinos Apostolou Doxiadis in the mid-20th century, deriving from the Greek word “oikos,” meaning house or dwelling.
Ekistics seeks to understand the principles and processes of settlement organization, including urban planning, regional development, housing, transportation, and the interactions between human societies and their environments. It aims to create more efficient, sustainable, and livable human settlements through interdisciplinary approaches that integrate architecture, sociology, economics, geography, and environmental studies.
