The idea of universal rights meant that all human beings were supposed to be equal and should enjoy basic rights such as freedom, equality, and liberty. However, in practice, these rights were not given equally to everyone. There was a clear gap between the ideals that were being proclaimed and the way people were actually treated. One major contradiction was related to women. During the French Revolution, the ideas of liberty and equality became very popular, but women were still denied many political rights. They could participate in revolutionary activities and demand equality, yet they were not given the same political status as men.
