Added an answer on May 15, 2024 at 12:13 am

Physical and chemical processes can be classified by the changes occurring on the molecular level. In general, chemical processes involve changes in chemical bonds, while physical processes involve changes only in intermolecular forces.

What is it about the ocean that makes it look blue when it reflects the sky?

    Kavya T

Added an answer on May 15, 2024 at 12:12 am

The ocean is blue because water absorbs colors in the red part of the light spectrum. Like a filter, this leaves behind colors in the blue part of the light spectrum for us to see. The ocean may also take on green, red, or other hues as light bounces off of floating sediments and particles in the waRead more

How does tomato juice make skunk smell go away?

    Kavya T
    Kavya T Knowledge Contributor
Added an answer on May 15, 2024 at 12:11 am

Tomato juice does not make skunk odor go away. More specifically, tomato juice does not react chemically with the skunk odor to destroy it. Instead, it simply has a strong enough smell on its own to partially mask the skunk smell. But in this respect, it is no different from any other strong odor.

How does plasma make a campfire flame orange?

    Kavya T
    Kavya T Knowledge Contributor
Added an answer on May 15, 2024 at 12:11 am

The de-excitation of plasma (charged gas) is not the source of the light given off by a campfire's flame. The incandescence of solid soot particles billowing up on an updraft of hot air is what creates the light seen as a flame.

How does dissolving a salt molecule in water make its atoms ionize?

    Kavya T
    Kavya T Knowledge Contributor
Added an answer on May 15, 2024 at 12:10 am

Dissolving a salt molecule in water does not make its atoms ionize. The atoms in solid salts are already ionized long before touching water.

How do I know if something is an acid so I can avoid eating it?

    Kavya T
    Kavya T Knowledge Contributor
Added an answer on May 15, 2024 at 12:09 am

A food with a pH below 4.6 is high in acid. This includes many citrus fruits, plums, grapes, pomegranates, and several other fruits. Tomatoes, which are technically a fruit, are also acidic. The pH value tells you if something is an acid, a base, or neutral.

How can glass be a liquid if it's so hard?

    Kavya T
    Kavya T Knowledge Contributor
Added an answer on May 15, 2024 at 12:08 am

Glass is not a liquid in the strictest sense of the word. But it is also not a standard solid. The chemistry of glass is complex and research is ongoing, but the current consensus is that glass is a phase of matter all its own, known as an "amorphous solid".

Can you light diamond on fire?

    Kavya T
    Kavya T Knowledge Contributor
Added an answer on May 15, 2024 at 12:07 am

YES, you can. Although diamond requires a higher temperature to burn, it does indeed burn via normal carbon combustion. You can even burn diamond in a regular flame if you are patient and conditions are right. To accelerate the burning of diamond, you can give it more heat and more oxygen
