In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) demoted the much-loved Pluto from its position as the ninth planet from the Sun to one of five “dwarf planets.”

The IAU, an organization that governs international professional astronomical activities worldwide, determined a planet must meet three criteria: It orbits around the sun, it is a spherical shape and it is big enough that its gravity cleared away any other objects of a similar size near its orbit.

Pluto only meets two of the criteria required to be a planet. Because it is not gravitationally dominant, Pluto is considered a dwarf planet.

The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. It is an artificial 82 km waterway in Panama

It cuts across the Isthmus of Panama in a narrow land bridge between North and South America. Prior, ships had to sail around the tip of South America. It takes about 8 hours to cross the Canal’s 50 miles (77km). That saves days. If a ship had to navigate down and around Cape Horn at the tip of South America and back up the other side, it would have to travel nearly 12,500 miles (20,000 km).

The American Society of Civil Engineers has dubbed the Panama Canal one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World. It’s one of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken.

A system of locks at each end of the Canal lifts ships up 85 feet (26 meters) above sea level to an artificial lake. Ships traverse the artificial lake, as well as a series of improved and artificial channels, and then are lowered again in more locks to sea level at the other side.

The locks are 110 feet (33 meters) feet wide and 1000 feet (300 meters) long. About 30-MILLION pounds (1,400,000 kilos) of explosives were used to help clear the land for the canal.

A male honey bee is called Drone.

Unlike the female worker bee, a drone has no stinger. He does not gather nectar or pollen and cannot feed without assistance from worker bees. His only role is to mate with a maiden queen in nuptial flight.

During this mating activity, hundreds or even thousands of male bees will compete to mate with a queen. They don’t fight. They simply see who can fly closest to successfully mate.

The drone offers something absolutely essential to the future of bees – genetic diversity.

This is a fundamental requirement for any successful colony. A queen only mates during one brief period in her early life, over the course of a small number of mating flights. She will mate with drones from numerous colonies, which broadens the genetic pool. This generally has positive benefits, such as a greater ability to resist disease.

It is highly worn during formal occasions and large gatherings.
