    Underground nuclear testing involves detonating nuclear weapons at a sufficient depth underground to contain the explosion and prevent radioactive material from entering the atmosphere. The first underground nuclear explosion took place on September 19, 1957, when the United States detonated a 1.7-kiloton nuclear weapon in an underground tunnel at the Nevada Test Site.
