Sequence numbers in TCP are used to uniquely identify each byte of data sent within a connection. Acknowledgment numbers indicate the sequence number of the next expected byte from the sender. Together, they enable reliable data transmission and orderly delivery of packets by allowing the sender to track which packets have been successfully received by the receiver and which packets need to be retransmitted in case of loss or corruption.
