David Livingstone was the 1st European to cross the continent from west to east to discover the Zambesi River, the Victoria Falls and several major central American lakes. His major achievement and legacy was that his account of the Nyangwe massacre caused public outcry in Britain and forced the government to act. In 1873 the Sultan of Zanzibar signed a treaty which abolished the East African slave trade.
