Phantom limb sensations occur when a person continues to feel sensations, such as pain or itchiness, in a limb that has been amputated. This happens because the brain’s map of the body, called the cortical homunculus, still contains the representation of the missing limb. The sensory neurons and brain areas associated with the limb can still be active, leading to these persistent sensations.
