Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton MRIA
Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton MRIA (6 October 1903 – 25 June 1995) was an Irish physicist and Nobel laureate who first split the atom. He is best known for his work with John Cockcroft to construct one of the earliest types of particle accelerator, the Cockcroft–Walton generator.
Manchester is the birthplace of nuclear physics and this year marks 100 years since Ernest Rutherford ‘split the atom’ at The University of Manchester…or does it? In 1917, the Nobel Prize winner actually became the first person to create an artificial nuclear reaction in laboratories at the University.
