The main character of the book, “Black Beauty” is a handsome and elegant black horse of the era before automobiles. He is also the narrator of the novel.
He is initially owned by kind masters but is sold to successively crueler owners. Eventually he collapses from overwork and ill treatment, but in the end he is sold to another kind owner and recovers.
“Black Beauty” was Anna Sewell’s only novel, and it was meant to promote the humane treatment of horses. The novel exposes the sometimes harsh treatment and working conditions of horses during that time.
