India’s first man in space was Rakesh Sharma. He flew aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11 in 1984 as part of the Intercosmos program, becoming the first Indian citizen to travel to space. During the mission, Sharma famously responded to then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s question about how India looked from space with the iconic words, “Saare Jahan Se Achha” (Better than the entire world).
