The first foreigner to receive the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, was Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, also known as “Frontier Gandhi.” He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1987 for his unwavering commitment to nonviolence and his efforts towards peace and social harmony.
