Zain-ul-Abidin commissioned the Persian translation of Rajatarangini, a 12th century Sanskrit chronicle by Kashmiri historian Kalhana. The word Rajatarangini means “River of Kings” and the book covers the history of medieval Kashmir from the earliest times to the time of its composition. It is made up of 7,826 verses divided into eight books called Tarangas. The book includes myths and folk tales, and explores themes such as the transience of human life and the inevitability of history.
