The concept of the lift, or elevator, has evolved over centuries, but the modern safety elevator, which made high-rise buildings feasible, was invented by Elisha Otis. In 1852, Otis introduced a safety mechanism to prevent elevators from falling if the hoisting cable broke. He demonstrated this safety device at the New York World’s Fair in 1854, which led to widespread acceptance and use of elevators. Thus, Elisha Otis is often credited with inventing the modern elevator.
