A 29-year-old Indian wrestler, Vinesh Phogat, announced her retirement after her disqualification from the Olympics for being 100 grams overweight moments prior to her gold medal bout in the 50 kg category. On account of severe dehydration caused as a result of extreme weight-cutting measures, she appealed to the CAS to have her awarded a joint silver medal. Phogat is a three-time Olympian across different weight classes, the first international wrestler to have defeated the reigning champion Yui Susaki, and the first female wrestler from India to have entered an Olympic final in 2024. She is also an outright winner of gold at the Commonwealth Games multiple times and a two-time bronze medalist at the World Wrestling Championships.
