The laws of constant proportion were enunciated by Joseph Proust, a French chemist, in the late 18th century. These laws state that a pure chemical compound always contains the same elements in the same proportion by mass, regardless of the compound’s source or method of preparation. This observation was a significant contribution to the development of modern chemistry.
