Penicillin was discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming, a Scottish bacteriologist, in 1928. Fleming accidentally discovered the antibiotic properties of Penicillium mold when he noticed that a mold called Penicillium notatum had killed bacteria growing in a petri dish. This serendipitous discovery marked the beginning of modern antibiotics and revolutionized medicine by providing an effective treatment for bacterial infections.
