Harihara I, a ruler of the Sangama dynasty (1336-1485), earned the title of “master of the eastern and western seas” (Purvapaschima Samudradhishavara) after gaining control of most of the area south of the Tungabhadra River. Harihara I ruled from 1336 to 1356, and was a member of a cowherd pastoralist group that claimed Yadava lineage. He and his brother Bukka Raya I founded the Empire of Vijayanagara in 1336, which was centered in South India’s Deccan Plateau region.
